Sonata in A Major by César Franck
Concerto for Violin by Samuel Barber
Sonata for Violin and Piano by Arno Babadjanian

Lucas Baker and Noelle Dannenbring formed Kōrua after having met at the 2020 Adam Summer School for chamber music. They were placed in the same chamber music ensemble and bonded over a keen interest in further developing a professional classical violin and piano duo. Their name, Kōrua, was inspired by the concept of partnership – Kōrua means “you two”- and the symbolism of the Koru spiral – new life, growth, strength and peace- reflecting the duo’s musical intentions.

Kōrua have performed around the North Island and given concerts in Cambridge, Rotorua, Taupo and Wellington. During 2020, they took part in online concerts and joined musicians from many continents in ‘Sunday Soirees,’ a fourteen-week international concert series held by New Zealand String Quartet’s Helene Pohl. Both members of the violin and piano duo have received much personal success in the field of collaborative music making and hold vast amounts of experience under different chamber music ensemble combinations.

Lucas plays on a Pressenda violin belonging to the late violinist, Stephen Managh, who generously wanted the instrument to be played by New Zealand’s most promising young violinists to assist them in their musical careers. Kōrua aspires to create more coherency between different performing art forms and rearrange orchestral ballet repertoire for violin and piano duo. The pair envisions showcasing new and unfamiliar compositions and composers, and are presently working on repertoire for their 2021 concert series.
